Importance of Personality and Communication in the Workplace

Personality and communication styles can mirror one another, showing us indicators of how we respond to situations. Understanding ourselves give us the emotional intelligence to respond with respect and professionalism in situations that test our strength. We have all had those conversations that have awkwardly turned confrontational or butterflies in our stomachs as we are about to walk into a meeting that we are not very comfortable with.

A personality or communication assessment provides insight on dominating traits in specific categories. Knowing your dominant characteristics allows you to adapt to those around you, creating more conducive situations. Walking into any conversation with respect is a great foundation but adaptation makes the outcome for all parties involved more beneficial.

Our firm currently utilizes the True Color personality assessment for specific job searches. There is research that has proven specific types of communication and personalities are more successful in certain professions. As mentioned above, if one person understands their dominant traits, they can adapt to them—with one caveat: Constant adaptation may not bring long-term fulfillment.

Mark Murphy shares a free comprehensive guide to four communication styles: analytical, intuitive, functional, and personal. They define how we give and receive information, which allows one to learn how work with others that communicate differently.

Taking this assessment will allow you to understand your primary form. This knowledge will allow you to modify and pivot your communication style to ensure the other party best receives it. You will find that each communication style has similar personality traits that mirror the communication. If you are interested in taking the True Color personality test, let us know and we will send you the link.

Our next article will focus on how each communication style can be best utilized in a coaching or performance appraisal situation since we are quickly approaching that time of year!
